Madeira airport transfers are easiest to arrange once you know your accommodation address, arrival time and luggage requirements. Choose the Aerobus if your hotel is near a stop and the timetable fits. Choose a taxi or private transfer if you want to reach the entrance without another connection, especially after a late flight.
Despite the frequent use of “Funchal Airport,” Madeira’s international airport is in Santa Cruz, not central Funchal. Book transport to the actual property rather than selecting a broad destination and hoping the final stretch sorts itself out.
This guide covers arrival transfers, fares, pickup arrangements and the return trip. For transport during the rest of your stay, see the guide to getting around Madeira.
Which Madeira Airport Transfer Should You Choose?
The cheapest ticket is not always the cheapest complete journey. Compare transport for your whole group, including any onward taxi, waiting time and walk with luggage.
| Option | Choose it when | Check before travelling |
|---|---|---|
| Aerobus | Your accommodation is near a published stop | Service hours, payment and the walk from the stop |
| Airport taxi | You want a direct ride without arranging a booking | Fare basis, supplements and luggage capacity |
| Private transfer | You want an arranged pickup or need a particular vehicle | Total price, waiting allowance and delay terms |
| Ride app | You are comfortable arranging pickup after landing | Live quote, meeting point and vehicle size |
| Rental car | You need a car for the holiday itself | Collection hours, deposit requirements and parking |
For one person travelling light, start by checking the bus. For a family with suitcases, compare the combined bus fare against a vehicle quote. For accommodation away from the bus route, price the complete journey before deciding.

Aerobus: Airport Transfers to Funchal and the Lido
Tickets and payment
The published tariff checked in October 2026 lists an adult Aerobus ticket at €6.70 and a child ticket at €3.30. Confirm which ages qualify for the child fare. The route information also specifies cash payment, so bring euros rather than relying on a card. Check the official SIGA Aerobus fares and passenger information before travelling.
At that adult fare, two travellers pay €13.40 and four pay €26.80 for one journey. Those totals provide a useful starting point when comparing a private vehicle, but add any transport needed between the bus stop and your accommodation.
Keep a few smaller notes or coins accessible. Arriving with the right money is simpler than finding it at the bottom of a suitcase while other passengers wait.
Stops and journey times
The route serves central Funchal before continuing through the hotel district to Praia Formosa. Published journey times from the airport are approximately 22 minutes to Mercado, 24 minutes to Avenida do Mar, 38 minutes to Lido and 50 minutes to Praia Formosa.

The timetable effective from April 1, 2026 shows airport departures between 08:30 and 22:00, with variations between weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Departures from Praia Formosa run between 07:00 and 21:00. There is no Aerobus service on December 25. Use the official Aerobus timetable and stop diagram to select the correct journey.
Do not confuse the departure time from Praia Formosa with the pickup time at a later stop. For the return journey, confirm when the airport bound bus reaches your boarding point.
Check the walk, not just the nearest stop
Ask your accommodation which stop to use, then check the route to its entrance. Distance alone does not tell you whether the walk includes a steep street, steps or an awkward crossing. A short walk with a backpack and the same walk with two large cases are different propositions.
Ordinary scheduled buses are worth investigating if the Aerobus does not suit your destination. Check that the chosen departure explicitly serves the airport, rather than assuming every bus on a similar route does. The guide to Madeira bus routes, tickets and trip planning covers the wider network without treating every service as an airport shuttle.
Taking a Taxi From Madeira Airport
The taxi rank is at Arrivals on ground floor 0. Airport taxi information also lists higher charges for night, weekend and public holiday travel, plus a supplement for baggage or animals. Check the airport’s taxi location and fare information when planning your arrival.
Give the driver the full accommodation address before loading your bags. Ask whether the journey will use the meter or an agreed quoted price, what supplements apply, and how you can pay. Request a receipt at the end.
Do not mistake a published starting charge for the cost of the complete transfer. “Airport to Funchal” is also too broad to establish an exact total: the destination should be your hotel or apartment entrance, not simply the city name.
For a larger group, establish passenger and baggage capacity together. A vehicle with enough seats may still be the wrong choice for several large suitcases, a folded stroller and hand luggage. Tell the dispatcher or driver what needs to fit rather than giving only the passenger count.
Booking a Private Airport Transfer
A private transfer is worth considering when you want the arrival arrangements settled before flying. It is particularly useful for a late arrival, a family needing child seats, or accommodation that would otherwise require a bus connection.
Compare written quotes for the same journey and passenger group. Check whether the advertised amount is per person or per vehicle, and whether it covers one direction or a return booking. A low headline price is not much use if the vehicle you need costs more.
Before paying, obtain confirmation of:
- The total price for the full address and all passengers.
- The vehicle’s capacity for your stated luggage.
- The meeting point and driver contact method.
- The included waiting time and when it starts.
- The cancellation, flight delay and diversion terms.
Provide the flight number, arrival date and a working mobile number. Ask whether the operator tracks flight changes, but do not assume that tracking means unlimited waiting or automatic refunds.
Read the meeting instructions before departure and save them offline. If the driver is not where expected, use the booking contact number before buying replacement transport. Keep written confirmation of any changed arrangements, especially if your flight is moved to another day.
Transfers to Funchal, Calheta and Other Bases
Central Funchal and the Lido
For either area, compare the property entrance with the Aerobus stop rather than assuming that its neighbourhood name guarantees an easy walk. Ask the hotel for the best stop in both directions; the most convenient arrival stop may not settle the return arrangement.
If you have not booked accommodation yet, the comparison of Funchal Old Town and the Lido helps connect the transfer decision with where you want to spend your evenings.
Calheta, Ponta do Sol and accommodation elsewhere
For Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz, Seixal or Santana, request a quote to the property itself. Do not use a Funchal transfer price as a placeholder for another destination.
Compare a direct vehicle against a fully planned bus connection, including the departure times and final walk. Reject an itinerary that depends on catching a connection almost immediately after landing. Scheduled arrival time is not the time you will be outside with your bags.
For an apartment or villa, send the address and a map pin. Ask the host whether a normal passenger vehicle can reach the entrance, where the driver should stop and whether any steps remain. Arrival instructions are more useful before the flight than during a roadside phone call.
Using Uber or Bolt at Madeira Airport
Uber and Bolt are available in Madeira. A direct road journey between the airport and Funchal can take around 20 to 25 minutes, but treat that as a driving estimate, not the total time from landing to hotel. These transport options and journey guidance appear in the Madeira Tourism Board’s transport FAQs.
Compare the price shown when you are ready to leave, rather than a screenshot from another traveller. Check the vehicle category against your passengers and luggage before confirming.
Follow the pickup instructions inside the app. Do not assume the meeting point is the taxi rank. Match the registration and driver details before entering the vehicle, and send a message if the pickup position is unclear.
For a time sensitive departure, decide in advance what you will do if no suitable car accepts the request. An app can be convenient, but a backup plan should not begin when you are already late.
Child Seats, Wheelchairs and Extra Luggage
Book child seats explicitly. Give the operator each child’s age, height and weight, and ask which seat will be supplied. “Travelling with children” is not a complete equipment request. Confirm whether fitting the seats changes passenger capacity or the quoted price.
State that you are bringing a stroller, travel cot, sports equipment or unusually large cases. Ask for written acceptance rather than relying on a broad luggage allowance.
For wheelchair travel, explain whether you can transfer into a passenger seat or must remain in the wheelchair. Supply its dimensions and weight, including whether it folds, and ask the operator to confirm the suitable vehicle and boarding arrangement.
Airport assistance and the onward vehicle require separate attention. Request Madeira Airport’s MyWay mobility assistance through your airline or travel agent when booking, or at least 48 hours before the published flight departure time. Do not treat that request as confirmation of an accessible hotel transfer.
Should You Collect a Rental Car Instead?
Choose an airport rental because you need a car during the holiday, not just because it replaces one transfer. Compare the complete rental cost, parking and collection arrangements against transfers plus transport on the days you need it.
Before booking, check the desk’s opening hours, late arrival procedure and whether collection takes place at the terminal or requires a shuttle. Confirm the deposit and payment requirements too; arriving with a reservation is not a substitute for meeting the collection conditions.
If you plan to spend several days without driving, compare collecting a car later. The guide to renting a car in Madeira covers the broader decision without turning an airport transfer into a week of unnecessary rental costs.
Planning Your Return Transfer
Work backwards from your airline’s recommended airport arrival time, not from takeoff. Add the drive, pickup arrangements and a sensible allowance for disruption. If returning a rental car, allow for refuelling, inspection and any shuttle to the terminal.
For a bus journey, choose a service that leaves room for a missed departure or delay. Confirm the correct side of the road, stop location and passing time beforehand. Do not build an early flight around a bus that reaches the airport after your check in deadline.
For a booked vehicle, reconfirm the collection time and address the day before. Make sure “pickup” means your accommodation entrance, or agree another accessible meeting point.
The best Madeira airport transfer is the one that fits the complete journey: your arrival time, your group, your bags and the actual destination. Settle those details before comparing prices and the choice becomes much simpler.
