Madeira to Porto Santo by Ferry

The Madeira to Porto Santo ferry connects Funchal with Porto Santo aboard Porto Santo Line’s Lobo Marinho. The crossing takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, and the ship carries both foot passengers and vehicles to Porto Santo’s Porto de Abrigo. It works for a beach day or a longer stay, provided the sailing dates fit your plans.

The booking needs more thought than choosing an outward departure. Check the return sailing, distinguish ordinary visitor fares from discounted categories, and decide whether taking a car justifies the extra cost. Allow time for boarding and transfers at both ends; the advertised crossing is only part of the journey.

How long does the ferry take?

The advertised journey is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes each way. For planning purposes, allow around two and a half hours at sea, then add your journey to the terminal, the required boarding time and onward transport after arrival. Do not treat the scheduled arrival as the moment you will reach your hotel or put a towel on the sand.

A simple sequence distinguishes the advertised sea crossing from the additional travel stages: reaching the terminal, boarding, sailing, and continuing onward after arrival.
The scheduled crossing is only one part of the trip; allow for terminal and onward travel too.

A return trip means spending roughly four and a half hours aboard, before those other arrangements. That is worth considering if you have young children, dislike longer boat journeys or only have a few days in Madeira.

The ferry makes most sense when its timetable gives you enough time on Porto Santo for the visit you want. If you are still deciding between sea and air travel, compare the practical differences in our guide to getting from Madeira to Porto Santo, rather than comparing crossing time with flight time alone.

Check the timetable before committing to accommodation

Use the Timetables section on Porto Santo Line’s booking site for your travel month, then check availability for the exact outward and return dates. Do not build an itinerary around a departure time copied from an old travel article. A convenient morning crossing on one date does not establish the schedule for another.

For a same day visit, check both journeys together. For an overnight stay, confirm the return sailing before paying for accommodation you cannot change. If your preferred date is not available, establish whether the sailing is sold out, not operating or not yet open for purchase.

Look for service notices as well as timetable entries. Check again shortly before departure, and provide a mobile number and email address that you can access during your holiday.

Keep the end of your Madeira trip in mind too. A ferry return followed by an international flight leaves little room for disruption. Spending the night back on Madeira before flying is a more cautious arrangement, although it cannot remove every travel risk.

Madeira to Porto Santo ferry prices

The Porto Santo Line 2026 passenger and vehicle tariff separates fares by season, travel class and passenger category. The figures below use the columns without the immediate Social Mobility Allowance discount, rather than the lower subsidized figures. Confirm eligibility before selecting any discounted category.

Selected published 2026 passenger fares, excluding the monthly fuel surcharge
Ticket category January–March and October–December April–September
Adult tourist class, one way €37.12 €43.83
Adult tourist class, return €58.90 €72.02
Adult first class, return €89.28 €101.36
Child aged 5–11, tourist class, return €29.44 €36.00

These are published base fares, not guaranteed checkout totals. The tariff excludes the monthly fuel surcharge. Children aged 0–4 travel free under the published tariff, but still require a ticket.

For two adults travelling in tourist class during April–September, the published return fares add up to €144.04 before the surcharge and other expenses. Add transfers, food and anything you plan to book on Porto Santo when judging the day’s cost.

Compare a return ticket with two separate one way purchases rather than assuming the totals match. Check package inclusions carefully too: a ferry ticket, a transfer package and a ticket combined with accommodation are different purchases. The cheapest headline figure is not necessarily the cheapest arrangement for your group.

Is first class worth paying for?

Compare the fare difference with what you want from the crossing. First class may appeal if you value a separate passenger area, but check the current inclusions before upgrading. A higher fare does not buy calmer water.

For a couple making a straightforward beach visit, putting the difference toward convenient transfers may be more useful. For someone who expects to spend most of the crossing seated indoors, the accommodation aboard may carry more weight in the decision.

Booking tickets without avoidable mistakes

Before paying, check passenger names, dates, departure direction and the return journey. Funchal to Porto Santo and Porto Santo to Funchal are easy enough to distinguish until you are booking several parts of a holiday at once.

Enter every traveller, including infants. If taking a vehicle, check that its category and details match the booking. Save the confirmation somewhere accessible without relying on a mobile signal, and keep identification with your boarding documents rather than inside a packed suitcase.

Read the change and cancellation conditions attached to the purchase. Do not assume that deciding against the trip qualifies for a refund, or that changing a date will be free. Ask about the cost of changing the whole booking if it includes passengers, a car or accommodation.

If travelling with friends, agree the dates and payment arrangements before one person buys everyone’s tickets. Ferry administration is a poor use of beach time.

Where to board in Funchal and when to arrive

The ferry leaves from the south quay of Funchal’s port. Use the boarding location on your ticket or confirmation when arranging transport. Giving a driver the ship’s name and destination is more useful than asking for a vague drop off “at the waterfront”.

Porto Santo Line’s boarding requirements distinguish foot passengers from travellers bringing a car:

  • Foot passengers: present yourself at the passenger terminal with a valid ticket no later than 30 minutes before departure.
  • Passengers travelling with a car: arrive at the ship’s garage entrance one hour before departure.
  • Identification: bring an accepted identity document for boarding; a passport is a straightforward option for international visitors.
  • Vehicle boarding: only the driver enters through the car deck; other occupants use the passenger boarding route.
A two-branch diagram shows foot passengers reaching the passenger terminal at least 30 minutes before departure, while passengers with a car arrive at the garage entrance one hour before departure; the driver boards through the car deck and other occupants use the passenger route.
Check the correct boarding location and deadline for your travel type.

Passengers requiring mobility assistance should contact the operator before purchasing and at least 48 hours ahead. Assisted boarding arrangements require arrival one hour before departure. Confirm the arrangements for both journeys using the Porto Santo Line boarding and accessibility guidance.

Treat the published boarding deadline as the latest permitted arrival, not your target. Leave additional time to find the entrance, deal with luggage and resolve any ticket issue. With a family, decide who will keep the children’s documents and who will handle bags before separating from the driver.

Should you take a car to Porto Santo?

Taking a car can suit a longer stay, a group carrying plenty of luggage or travellers whose accommodation and plans make independent transport useful. It is less compelling if the visit consists of a transfer, lunch and several hours at the beach.

Price the complete arrangement before deciding. Compare the vehicle crossing and passenger tickets with travelling on foot and arranging transport after arrival. Check whether a combined passenger and vehicle offer changes the calculation. Do not assume a standard passenger fare includes a car.

For a rental vehicle, obtain written permission from the rental company before purchasing ferry transport. Ask whether the agreement permits travel to Porto Santo, whether cover remains valid aboard the ferry and what assistance would be available there. The ferry operator accepting a vehicle does not establish what your rental contract allows.

Our guide to renting a car in Madeira covers the wider rental decisions. For this crossing, the practical question is narrower: will having the car on Porto Santo save enough time and inconvenience to justify its transport cost?

If you do take it, prepare a small bag before joining the boarding queue. Keep documents, valuables, water and anything children need with you, rather than planning to reorganize the boot while vehicles are loading.

Luggage and comfort during the crossing

Check the baggage dimensions and weight allowance stated in your booking conditions before packing. Do not assume that everything permitted as checked luggage can stay beside your seat, or that sports equipment follows ordinary suitcase rules.

For a day visit, pack around what you will actually use: swimwear, a towel, sun protection, a light layer and a change of clothes. Keep electronics and documents protected from wet swimwear. For an overnight stay, separate your crossing essentials from the main suitcase so you are not searching through everything aboard.

Decide what you want from the journey before choosing a ticket class. If food or refreshments matter to your budget, check what the purchased fare or package includes rather than assuming a meal comes with the crossing.

Travelling with a pet requires separate preparation. Confirm the permitted accommodation, carrier requirements and boarding arrangements directly before booking; do not assume your animal can remain beside your passenger seat.

What if you get seasick?

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before departure. Sitting near the middle of a boat, looking toward the horizon and avoiding reading or screens can help. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol shortly before or during travel. These measures are included in the NHS advice on preventing and easing motion sickness.

Ask a pharmacist about suitable treatment before the trip, particularly for children or anyone taking other medicines. Do not choose medication solely from another passenger’s recommendation. Once aboard, follow crew instructions about seating and access to outdoor areas.

Arriving in Porto Santo

Plan the journey from the port to Vila Baleira, your accommodation or your chosen beach access before sailing. Arrival at the harbour is not the same as arrival at your final destination.

If you have booked a transfer, save the meeting point and establish whether the return transfer is included. Ask where it collects passengers and when. If your hotel is arranging transport, provide the ferry details rather than only an approximate arrival time.

Walking may suit some travellers, but check the actual route from the passenger exit to the address. Consider luggage, heat, children and the return journey, not just how short the line looks on a map.

For a day visit, keep the plan restrained. Choose a beach area and lunch stop, then add other activities only if the timetable leaves room. Our comparison of a Porto Santo day trip versus an overnight stay helps assess whether the time ashore matches your expectations.

Delays, cancellations and protecting your plans

Check service messages before leaving for the terminal. If a sailing changes, contact the operator about the options for your booking before buying replacement transport or extending accommodation. Keep confirmations, messages and receipts.

For a cancelled ferry service, EU passenger rules generally provide a choice between reimbursement and rerouting under comparable conditions. Severe weather can affect other entitlements: accommodation assistance and delay compensation are not automatic in those circumstances. The EU guidance on ship passenger rights distinguishes these rights and exceptions.

A ferry refund does not necessarily settle the cost of a separately booked hotel, activity or missed flight. Check those cancellation terms individually, and read any travel insurance policy for disruption and missed departure cover rather than assuming it applies.

Before departure, make one final check of both sailings, boarding times, identification and onward transport. With those settled, use the Porto Santo travel guide to plan the stay itself. Keep the ferry arrangements dependable and the island schedule reasonably loose.
